As a Nurse for many years I have worked in a great variety of settings and positions. For me the most poignant patients have been the seniors who were left to age in large institutions and were often lonely, sad and feeling neglected by the world around them.
In 1995 when our children were starting to leave home the specter of “empty nesting” was looming and I started to wonder: what if we could create a new family of friends to share our lives with? After many conversations with my husband, and as the result of a dream, we found a way: through starting an Adult Family Home. We chose the name “Legacy and Tranquility” because it embodied the values we want to live and be remembered for.
Care: We believe that the best care is given in a social, rather than a medical, model of care. We commit ourselves to providing an enhanced level of care so our residents can safely move from a skilled nursing facility to our “home.” We feel rewarded that our “homes” are full of life with caring staff and residents to care for.
Compassion: Care should always be given by a caregiver who is emotionally involved in the process of caring. Our philosophy reflects that if we can no longer laugh or cry with our residents, it would be time to leave this business. Enabling ourselves to emotionally connect and feel the needs of our residents is vital as care without compassion is no care at all.
Companionship: The AFH model of care is a social model of care rather than a medical model. The activities of each day provide numerous opportunities for interaction between residents and caregivers. For example, we believe that “meals are meetings.” This reflects a value of meals where everyone is invited to share ideas and enjoy different topics of conversation as well as delicious food. Our activity program also provides many stimulating and fun social experiences.
Cost effective: We strive to charge rates that are well below those charged by large institutions. In essence, we provide long-term care in a “Bed and Breakfast” environment at a fraction of the cost of skilled nursing facilities.
We love what we do and we do it with joy and commitment. We welcome you to share that spirit by joining our Legacy & Tranquility Family.
